Photographing people, especially friends and family, is a lot of fun. Now it’s time to get creative and take your portrait photography skills to the next level. These tips will help you turn snap-shots into photographs you will cherish.
1. Placing your subject in the middle of the frame is generally a bad idea. The reason being is because it makes for a very uninteresting photograph. Try placing your subject in the left side or the right side of the frame, because now you are including some background in your photo, adding context.
2. You will want soft lighting for portrait photography. By keeping the light source to your back, you will avoid backlighting your subject, which makes them dark (this is a cool effect sometimes) losing detail in their face. Natural, outdoor lighting is best, and that is usually before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.
3. Your camera may have a “Portrait” setting, creating a blurred background because it sets a shallow depth of field, blurring the background. This feature is very useful, and it will allow the viewer to focus on the subject. If you want to create this effect manually, set your aperture below 5.6
4. Move in close to your subject. Zoom in; you can fill most of the frame with the person’s face. Try having your subject look in different directions as opposed to directly into the camera. Remember you want your subject to have fun and be comfortable.
5. Portraits are not just about a person’s face. Experiment capturing your subject without actually photographing their face. What can you say about someone by photographing their hands, feet, possessions? Can you photograph them in their element, where they work, or where they enjoy spending their free time?
6. Explore your inner creativity. Have fun tilting your camera, or have your subject run around or jump up and down. If you use a tripod in low lighting, you can create a streaking effect using a slow shutter speed with a moving subject.
There are no specific rules to follow, just have fun. Ask you subject if they have any ideas for certain shots or locations. Remember, after your photo shoot, it is nice to send your subject a photograph.

The most significant impact a person can have on their long term career earnings is to engage in salary negotiation early in their career. This will have a direct impact on the amount of earning potential they have in their future.
This might be considered whether it is your first job out of university or if it’s a mid-life job change. Further, there are financial impacts when you are in your career working for an employer that you are very happy with, of not negotiating your salary with the best timing.
During your career, you may earn pay raises and job advances within the company that you work for, but when the company offers regularly scheduled increases, as many companies do, the impact of your starting salary with that employer is significant.
This not only applies to your first salary and subsequent incremental raises but also to salary market differentials when you changes roles within a company. You may move into a job requiring significantly more responsibility or effort, but the salary you had beforehand can influence the starting salary of the new job.
Take a person starting a career as a system analyst in a high tech company somewhere in the United States, as an example. Say that person begins with a starting salary of $45,000. Most likely that person will have to dedicate at least 6 months to one full year before they are offered their first raise. Suppose it is a 10% raise which would be A LOT in most businesses. That person would gain an additional $4500 yearly based on that raise.
Now imagine that same employee started at $55,000 or even higher. That same pay raise of 10% would provide the same person $5500 additional salary per year. With the first salary, the employee would still be under the $50,000 salary band after one full year of work and after a 10% increase, while in the second situation the person would be at over $60,000 per annum after a 10% pay hike.
Now consider the compound effect of these two starting salaries on the employees earning potential. First let’s examine a 4 year horizon all things being equal (that is, suggesting no pay raises and no promotions). The person earning $45,000 will have earned $180,000 in gross salary in four years. The person earning $55,000 will have earned $220K in 4 years. That is a $40,000 differential just based on where the person starts in terms of salary.
Now imagine a 10% raise after the first year and consider the impact as the person advances through their career. The person with a higher salary in the beginning will always be ahead of the person with the lower starting salary, all things being equal (e.g. same title, same job performance). The person with the better salary negotiating will be moving ahead faster than the person starting with the lower salary. This impact amplifies with each subsequent year considering the same percent annual pay raise for each.
When requesting a pay increase, if a person earning $50,000 earns a 5% raise without negotiating anything additional, that’s okay. But consider the impact if the person negotiates a 15% increase because they have really performed well in the job and they have all the supporting research and a track record to command it. That employee will have negotiated $7,500 in a raise versus just accepting $2500. Multiply that by 10 years, and there is a clear $50,000 difference in the person’s salary potential.
Many experts feel it goes without saying that it is better to try negotiating a raise or an improvement to the compensation package than to simply accept what is offered. The first offer is usually the lowest offer and can be improved upon. This negotiation must be done with masterful skills and must be well founded with a supporting case for the increase.
We must also consider factors such as the job market, company guidelines, and on the job performance. However when well executed, it can really pay off. Remember to consider the importance of all factors of compensation when in salary negotiation. Some people truly value their spare time and quality of life, while others are willing to venture out and accept stock options instead of extra salary.
However, when it comes to salary negotiation, don’t be afraid to consider asking for more salary.

As a professional career coach, I’ve learned that a lot of people don’t consider their career plans as often as they should. Your annual career check-up should touch on issues close to you and how you really want to live your life, and it should also include the creation of a plan for next year.
During your personal annual career review, ask yourself eight questions:

2. How have I been with my personal life? Happy?
3. How I have been with what I do for myself? Happy?
4. Did I do something regularly that expresses my most strongly held values?
5. What one thing about my job would I change if could?
6. What do I wish was there that I left out of my life?
7. Who is a person whose life I admire?
8. What should your career game plan look like for the next year?
A good goal has a positive end. It should be something you want, not something you hate or think you should do. “I am going to exercise more” is one of those goals that sounds nice, but will undoubtedly end up on the back shelf. Instead set goals like: “I am going to find some kind of exercise that I enjoy. I will walk three times a week for 30 minutes.”
You should find a good strategy. Move toward something enjoyable, fulfilling, productive, and rewarding. What in your life do you find especially fulfilling? What that you do makes you lose all sense of time? In your life, increase what you have found meaningful for a significant positive benefit for you, and for the people around you.
A good strategy should move you away from people and things you find unfulfilling, meaningless, unproductive, or unrewarding. Who do you hate talking on the phone with and what do you not enjoy doing? What feels like a waste of time in your day? If you give yourself a sense of internal control over what happens to you in your life, you will learn to decrease what you find unrewarding.
While change is difficult, you *can* make your goals a reality and lead the life you desire. Prior to salary negotiating, it is very important to know exactly what your market value is. If you do not know exactly what your market value is, then it is like being blindfolded and not knowing what salary to ask when you ask for a raise or try to negotiate the best salary in your next job.
If you do not do your research, your employer will decide your pay increase for you and it may be very dissapointing. Millions of people regularly negotiate salary, but very few get the maximum pay increase that they could.
Research the market in advance of approaching your boss for a pay raise, or before revealing your expectatiosn for salary at job offer time. It is like a game. Do not reveal your information too soon. In this case, your strategy is to keep your information close to you. It could be your past salary history, or what you are planning to ask for in salary negotiation.
Know how much compensation you can command before you ever discuss salary negotiation with an employer.
If you are looking for a new job or are trying to ask for a raise, do salary research on the Internet first. There are great sites like SalaryExpert.com or Payscale.com who calculate all the salary information that is available.
One challenge is understanding the reliability of the source of the information. If a resume website is reporting salary ranges as reported by their list of job seekers, it may not be as precise as if the salaries are reported by the human resources department of the firms that are seeking to recruit personnel.

Think about cost savings, profits you’ve been responsible for and efficiency you may have brought to the business. This is the greatest way to communicate your worth when negotiating salary.

Is it possible to learn to speak German with an audio CD or Mp3 ? Without a doubt you can get some of the basics of the language that can lead to gaining fluency with a little more work and application. Listening to the CD or Mp3 in the car is a popular way to use the course. Commuting to work, for instance, is lost time so why not multi-task and listen to an audio. This is time well spent although it is important to reach a balance between driving and participating in the course.
There will be times when you need to concentrate on the road and may have to tune out of the audio. This is not good for learning but the more you listen to the course the easier it will get. I would suggest you listen to German audio CD’s in the car after you have listened to them a few times beforehand. In this way you will be able to tune in and out and still follow what is going on.
Another way to use a German CD or Mp3 is on public transport when commuting too. All you need is a personal player and you are ready to go. Although you don’t have to concentrate on driving in this situation it may not be possible because you have to talk along with the audio at time. This could be off putting talking aloud on a crowded bus or train or maybe it wouldn’t bother you.
Listening to German audios whilst doing exercise is another way to multi task you language learning process. Popular methods are to listen while working out at the gym or even jogging round the block.
So, an audio CD or Mp3 is good because it allows you to do more than one thing. however, to get the most out of the CD it pays to listen to it first with all your faculties devoted to the audio. After this you can then listen to it in multi task mode.
The one tip that you can apply to anything really, is to be consistent. In terms of a language try to hear and speak a bit of German each day. This consistent process will get you into a groove. As we are supposed to have innate abilities to learn language, time and consistency will be your greatest technique to becoming fluent in German.

Toll-free web conferencing means every participant in a conference call dials a toll-free number. There are two types of “free” in the web conferencing industry. Customer can access the conferencing service with a dial-in number and an optional password to disseminate among the group of callers. Such a password to access the service can be either permanent, with a limited usage (number of calls, time period, etc.), or created only for a single teleconference session. You can also pass control to an attendee in your meeting, making that person the presenter. Some web meeting services provide just desktop sharing capability. Others give you the added capability to select and show a specific document or application only.
Web conferencing can be used for group work when a small group of students is assigned a team project. The project work can be presented by video, audio, and computer conference depending upon the content. While web conferencing is usually more expensive, the fact that infinite amounts of data can be transferred and immediately reviewed easily outweighs this factor. They would meet via the audio conference bridge at scheduled times to complete their work. Once the conference attendees have connected to the bridge they may be required to enter their security or identification number.
