Vitamin Supplements and Bird Flu PandemicMar 15, 2006 - Linknet Health News Vitamin Supplements and Bird Flu Pandemic Mar 15, 2006 - Linknet Health News - by Rick HendershotHere is an excerpt from a study done by the American Council on Science and Health: "Will vitamin supplements and other Internet-advertised medicines and products that claim to offer protection against bird flu actually help? But not everybody agrees with this categorical claim that supplements have no impact on one's chances to get bird flu. The report seems to completely dismiss the oft-made claim that specific vitamins and natural supplements promote immune system health, and therefore make one (generally) less susceptible to infection. For example, Dr. Damien Downing, president of the British Society for Ecological Medicine, and medical director of the Alliance for Natural Health commenting on a similar categorical dismissal of the value of natural health supplements made by Professor Edzard Ernst of the University of Exeter, says: "I am amazed that Professor Ernst appears to have no knowledge of the extensive literature on the essential nature of zinc and vitamin C, for example, when the body is dealing with infections."According to Downing there is a significant body of research that backs the evidence that both zinc and vitamin C are essential for the immune system. And he warned that less than ten per cent of adults in the UK have sufficient levels of zinc in their diet. For discussion on vitamins and supplements see Vitamin and Mineral Discussion Blog.
