Health "Research Institute" Being Investigated for Insider Dealings According to a story in the New York Times, some U.S. hospital executives are being treated to lavish vacations and paid thousands of dollars to advise companies on how best to sell drugs, medical devices and financial services to hospitals. One company under investigation is the Healthcare Research and Development Institute (HRDI). This is a for-profit company owned by about 35 hospital executives and underwritten by 50 corporate sponsors who all sell supplies to hospitals. Many of these hospital executives, along with their wives, were recently given a free trip to a luxury resort in Colorado, compliments of HRDI. According to the NY Times, Richard Blumenthal, the attorney general of Connecticut, has launched an investigation into whether the HRDI allows certain companies to buy access to hospital executives who can influence what supplies or services are bought by their hospitals. This would not be in the best interests of the hospital. "At the very least it suggests insider dealings -- an insidious, incestuous, insider system," Blumenthal told the Times. His office has so far issued about 100 subpoenas, mostly to hospital supply companies. |
