Google might have changed the face of the Internet searching with its unique, and heavily guarded, search technology that has proven to producemore accurate results than the established search engines of the early years (despite attempts by businesses utilizing search engine optimization to try and manipulate the results!), however there is a new aspirant attempting to give the Internet search yet another makeover, and it appearsto be succeeding where so many others have failed. Bing.com, Microsoft’s newest baby was launched in the end of May 2009, and has starting then shown increases in acceptance each month in a market where popular opinion believed that Google could not, and would not, be closed in on possibly in our times. Only a couple of months after Microsoft’s introduction of Bing, Google’s market presence fell by 0.1 percent, while Bing soared to 9.3 percent of market share. Most other search engines have stagnated in their market share, but when the 2nd best search engine Yahoo has just 19.3 percent of the market share, it is remarkable that a fresh entrant such as Bing can climb to nearly 10 percent so quickly, and seems that it won’t just stop there.

What’s so outstanding about Bing? Is it just the $100million Internet Marketing and Search engine marketing program that has it biting away at the search engine market share? Or is there something actually worthwhile in the manner the search operates that places it above the rest, making it a real challenger to Google? Conceivably both. For example, Bing features a visual search function which lets a user to explain what they’re looking for and then whittle down their search based on picture results, thus a user who can remember what something looked like finds it hard to remember what it’s called, can quickly place what they’re after. Saw Caught a new model vehicle on the street but don’t understand what brand or type it was? Bing’s visual search will assist you in finding that car by providing you with a line-up of pictures from which to identify the closest and eventually find arrive at the exact car you were looking for. This may seem a simple idea to begin with, but Bing feels that they are changing the way everyone will use Internet searches in the future. By designing it to be more graphical, they hope to transform the way users search the web. It’s no surprise then that they like to refer to Bing a ‘decision engine,’ rather than a ‘search engine.’
