You are creating something that people will keep for years to come. You are capturing a very special moment in people’s lives. Your clients will be looking for a quality track record because it is such a special moment they want capturing. If you are a photographer you might want to consider photographing weddings because there is a lot of money to be made by doing them. As well as the money though there is the risk that you must manage well.

A disclaimer should be included in a well written up first time contract. A disclaimer is something that can prevent you from being sued later on. There are a few reason you should not be held accountable for and they are failure of equipment, miss placed pictures after they were sent away, and photos that do not develop properly. Otherwise you could get sued for breach of contract.

The hourly rate and how many pictures are to be taken should also be included in the contract. Something else you should include would be the fees for developing and the fee of the album. Make sure you discuss with your clients what their requirements are. There could be a particular family member that they want photographed separately, or a certain group of people they do not get to see very often.

Make a list of all the pictures that your client’s requested. Here are a few common ones, pre-ceremony, wedding ceremony, post-ceremony and reception. Who will be in certain photographs should be discussed with the client as well. Not every client will be the same so pay attention to what they are saying.

It is smart to always ask for a booking fee. Without this you could be caught out if something goes wrong. If they have paid nothing then they are less likely to try to solve any problems that may occur. At least 50% deposit should be paid prior to the wedding. So you don’t end up bothering the bride and groom during the reception, arrangements should be made for when the remainder will be paid. It would look very unprofessional if you did.

Photoshop is a good program to use if you are going to be processing the pictures yourself. You can enhance the photos with all sorts of techniques such as flaw removal, montage, changing the color to black and which or sepia, as well as other unique features.

Always look to see how you can add more value than what you said you would give. A special surprise will keep everyone talking and generating more business for you in the future. Think different. Imagine for example if you uploaded all their pictures onto a password protected part of your website so that they and their friends can login and view.

In the end doing bridal photography can be lucrative and fun as long as you build on your people skills.

If you focus on event photography you can make quite a bit of money. It is a varied and widely sought after field of photography.

How to do it

You must be careful what events to cover if you want to make money. Only where people want to retain memories will it be worth your while.

One idea is to go to kids sports events. Get permission from the coach to click pics for the parents watching and then start clicking away. If you turn up with a massive telephoto lens like the ones used for pro coverage of events, you will be taken seriously. Make sure you get all the children doing great action shots and then hand out flyers to all the parents watching with your web address. If you can write down the parents email address so you can email them the URL of you site then upload the pics to your web site that day and email everyone. If you have a simple shopping cart set up you can make money in a few hours as people pop in to see the pics and buy them for $20 or more a pop.

You can do a similar thing with weddings. Take all the regular pictures as part of the wedding coverage but then get your URL printed on the wedding invites and all the other wedding materials and also get an email list of all the wedding guests, offer the couple a nice 20% discount for doing this and then take lots of extra pics at the wedding of the guests doing all the things they do. Upload all the pics to your site and send the emails. You will then make a lot more money than the 20% discount it cost you because then 30 or 40 people will be also buying your pics at $20 or more a shot straight from your site. Also charging them more for higher resolution shots is a great bonus income as well.

The key is to just find a corner of the market where you can take the pics and then sell them easily online.

Dog shows, fashion shows, horse shows, car shows, livestock competitions, rock shows, – the list goes on. Keep your eye out in the events section of your local paper to see what is happening. Always ask for permission to shoot pics and if you need to offer the people 10% of the income if feel you need to so you can get easy access.

An event photographer is someone who you want to photograph your wedding. They should be motivated, have good experience and communication and most likely they will have their own style. An excellent event photographer will only posses these qualities through experience, so make sure that they are well trained and can focus on what you want is important.

Every event photographer will have their own style. You will want to make sure that your ideas about your wedding will coincide with their style. If you don’t you could up with a horrible experience. Depending on the style that your event photographer will use will vary. Some photographers like to be traditional and others like to be wild. Photos of the bride and groom, and the wedding party are examples of a traditional style. Making funny faces and having completely serious faces might be considered a wild style.

When choosing an event photographer you will want one who is highly motivated. You do not want to have someone who is inactive and sitting around missing all the good pictures they could be capturing. Motivation is not just about wanting to do the job, but finding a way to enjoy it and bring trust as well as good verbal communication to everyone as well.

Experience can only come to an event photographer over time. Make sure you ask your photographer how long they have been in the business, where they attended school and for how long, and who they were employed with before they went into business for themselves (if that is the case). This should help you when making a clear decision on an event photographer. If they are now employed by themselves you can find out what kind of work they produced when they were employed by asking their previous employer. It may be a devious way of getting information but it is better to find out then to have horrible pictures produced.

Make sure that you are relaxed around your event photographer. When you are around them they should make you feel comfortable as well. This will help them in capturing the precious photos later on at your wedding. You will see the emotion in the wedding pictures if you are nervous around your event photographer.

For someone who is dedicated then they may spend quite some time researching consumer reports to find the best digital camera. Finally you decide upon the latest 12 megapixel model with a huge optical zoom and a feature list as long as you arm. The problem is by the time you actually get to the mall, the model you have set your heart on is no longer the one to own as there is a new better version that you must now have.

If you are looking to buy your first digital camera that you may be wondering where to start owing the huge array of new technology about. For someone who is dedicated then they may spend quite some time researching consumer reports to find the best digital camera. Once the search is over it is time to gather up your savings for the camera of your dreams; that brand new 10 megapixel, 24 times optical zoom camera with a two and a half inch screen. It is only when you get to the mall and take a look in the camera shop that you realize that your choice is now on special offer because it has been replaced with a more feature packed model at a higher price.

A quick tip on this subject involves the batteries which have a tendency to run out quicker if a large LCD screen is fitted and is used constantly; some sound advice is carry spares! A digital camera with an optical zoom facility is the one to try for and a digital zoom only camera should be avoided if you want clear, well defined images. Unfortunately digital zooms just don’t cut it so avoid them unless you are buying an inexpensive camera as a gift for a child. As there are so many types of storage card available you will have to ensure you buy the correct one.

Now we are told that this latest model is in fact the best digital camera; we have no choice but to pay the extra and have that one instead. But this dilemma is very short lived because you promised yourself the best digital camera and that is what you are going to have. If you are new to digital cameras and photography the tips below might be useful and point you in the right direction. First off try and search out a model with a higher number of pixels, referred to megapixels; you ideally need over 5 although with today’s cameras it would be hard to find one under that anyway.

Generally speaking the higher the mega pixels, the better the actual photograph will come out where a mega pixel is equivalent to one million pixels. Superior color definition and the chance to print off larger than normal images are usually the main reasons for buying a model with high megapixel resolution. LCD screens have over the years become much larger which means you can frame your shot easier and view the result with more ease than ever before. The best digital cameras are able to touch up and edit the images this is an excellent feature to have as standard.

The only downside to this great feature is it uses more battery power so always keep a fresh set with you at all times if you don’t want to be caught out. More and more digital cameras are coming equipped with an optical zoom and this is the sort to try for even if it is only a three times power. Low spec cameras that only cost a fraction for their quality cousins will only have a digital zoom; unless you really aren’t at all fussy about your shots you would be well advised to stay clear of buying a digital zoom only camera. As there are so many types of storage card available you will have to ensure you buy the correct one.

Although there is quite a range of storage cards available it normally boils down to one of four types: the newer XD cards from Olympus and Fuji, the SD, card, Sony’s Memory Stick and the old but reliable Compact Flash. Try to obtain the largest memory you can for your camera and your budget. Whereas a few years ago a large storage card would be somewhere in the region of 2gb to 4mb, it is not uncommon to use cards with 16 gigabytes or more of storage now. Your life and interests should really be the ideal measuring stick for the type of digital camera you ultimately buy. Ultimately, the camera you choose should be one that you will take with you everywhere and use all the time.

For some novice photographers it can be quite frustrating when they think they’ve taken the perfect picture and then when it comes time to developing them they see all the flaws. Mind you, some experienced photographers run into the same problem as well. That’s what makes great editing software for photography so important.

A great program is Adobe’s Photoshop, which is good for not only the novelist but the experienced photographer as well. So all is not lost when a photo doesn’t turn out just the way you wanted it. Perhaps there are some flaws in it such as little spots that may have come from being on the lens of the camera for example. This is where retouching your photo is valuable.

Then there’s those times that something gets into your photo that you didn’t really want in their Maybe there are a few soda cans sitting on the ground that are really distracting from the focal point of your picture.

This is where you can use a couple of the tools that you may find in the software that you’re using such as the clone stamp or healing brush. With your clone stamp, you are able to actually paint over the areas that you don’t want in your picture just as if you were using a paintbrush. If you are using this tool though you want to use it in the areas of your picture where there isn’t that big of a difference in your color or the texture of the photo.

If that is not the criteria then you need to resort to the healing brush, which often is the better choice anyhow. Use it pretty well the same way but it will keep the color and texture around the spots that you’re removing easier. These really are a couple of neat tools to use when you want to retouch.

It’s always important that you inspect your photos carefully no matter what purpose are being used for you and you can do this make your checking very easy by creating an adjustment layer, then go to curves make a high contrast in the areas of your photo which you are more than likely going to see spots. This would be your sky or any open surface areas. This will make the spots stand out as if you were using a magnifier.

Now just click on the layer that’s in the background to make sure that you’re working on the right photo and then work with your clone stamp in the software. Then once you are done just take out the adjustment layer and you should have a perfect picture.

Two other great tools for working with for retouching is well are the burn tool and the Dodge tool. Burning is to make bright areas darker and the Dodge for making areas brighter. You also might want to consider the sponge tool as well.

Then when you want to remove noise, you can simply use plug-in filters like those that you find at no noise ninja. Many pieces of software are available to help you work and get the perfect photos.

Here are some simple yet effective tips for doing food photography.

Lighting the scene

The first important technique food photographers should learn is about lighting. When photographing food you should treat it as you would any other kind of subject and make sure it is lit correctly. Many pictures can be improved by using adequate lighting. Natural light is the best light source to use, so by a window is an ideal location. Natural light cuts out the shadows, and gives the food a more natural look which all food photographers want.

Using Props

The right props can bring a simple food dish alive. Some food types like fast food is dull and lifeless so choosing the right props of fresh fruit, vegetables, plates, candles etc will make the dull become magic. To be s good food photographer you must have a special eye and flair for design. if you have this skill naturally you will fly.

If you do a lot of food photography then shopping at second hand markets can be a great way to build your box of props. You can pick up expensive items like large pots and dishes and vases for a few dollars and a smile. If you do not do much then you may have to go shopping for what you need and bill the client!

Quickness

Unfortunately food won’t stay appealing for very long. As a food photographer you will want to be well prepared and ready to shoot your picture as soon as the dish is finished. This will give it no time to melt, collapse or lose its color. So knowing what you want the picture to turn out like will help you to prepare for the photo. One way food photographers prepare is to have everything arranged before the food is finished. By placing a temporary stand-in plate is an excellent way to get the lighting right, and when the food is finished you switch it with the finished dish and your picture is ready to be taken.

Way to improve your food photographs

An excellent food photographer will want to learn this last but not least creative technique when it comes to taking photographs of food. And that is to use a small amount of vegetable oil that you have on hand and brush it on the food. This will make your dish glisten and stand out deliciously in your pictures.

Touch base with the chef

You will usually be working with a food professional be it a stylist or chef. Hopefully you are not on a low budget shoot and have to do the displays yourself.

Take a few minutes before the shoot to talk with the chef and ask them how they like to work. Ask them if there is anything you need to know about the food that may not be obvious. If nothing else this will make them feel good so you will then be able to work closer and better together.

While old style cameras required photographic film, modern digital cameras necessitate memory cards as their most important accessory. The memory that is inbuilt in most cameras in only enough for a tiny number of photos, so you will need one or more storage cards at all costs.

You should get several digital camera storage cards as soon as you buy a new camera. Storage cards are tiny, so they are easy to carry around, they are also cheap as the price of circuitry is coming down fast, and they give you the freedom to take lots and lots of pictures.

For instance, if you will be in situations where you will be taking pictures if difficult to reach locales, such as in a national park, you will see how important it is to have the backup that digital camera storage cards can provide, to avoid running out of pictures in the middle of your trip.

In fact not having to think twice every time that you press the shutter will turn you into a bolder photographer. You will find that several risky pictures and framings give great results, which is why digital camera memory cards will make you a more experienced and ultimately better photographer.

Also, most digital cameras have a setting that will allow you to take three simultaneous pictures of the same subject – one slightly underexposed and another overexposed – and here also you will be able to choose the best one.

Just visualize the difference between being able to take dozens, or hundred photos a day while travelling. Taking a lot of extra pictures means that you will also end up with more photos to choose from at the end of your trip, resulting in nicer photo albums.

Another good thing of considering storage cards as crucial digital camera accessories is that if you ever forget to download the pictures onto a computer or other storage, you will not find yourself with a lot of interesting thing to snap but no memory to do it, because the memory you have is full.

One note of caution though. When buying digital camera storage cards, make sure that you get the right make, because not all memory cards are compatible with any kind of camera brand.

You will find digital camera storage cards with 32 gigabytes or more, but don’t put all your eggs in one basket by buying a single one, spread your storage across several memory cards for security, should one card fail.

Once you have a lot of digital camera memory cards, you should also get a card reader to transfer pictures to a PC more quickly, or also to send them directly to a digital camera printer.
