As we age, our hair produces less melanin, the same melanin that gives our skin its colour. The most evident sign of aging is the changing colour of our hair. This is the reason our hair becomes grey. At any age grey hair can appear. It’s not always a sign of aging. It is caused by a decline in pigment (grey hair) or a complete loss of pigment (white hair). The cause for it is not fully understood.

Age also has an effect on our hair in other ways. A number of women will notice that their hair thins and lacks life, for others it will appear to be dry and coarse. As we get older our hair starts to get drier, and needs more moisture. Older hair often loses some of its elasticity and the consistency alters. This is because as we get older the size of our hair follicles get smaller and hair growth slows down. Therefore there is not as much new growth to replace what is lost.

Sebum (oil produced naturally by our skin) lessens as our body ages, and so our hair, as a result, loses its natural shine and softness. Plus, during the menopause our production of keratin slows. This protein fibre is important to keeping our hair healthy and strong. For men, there is the issue of going bald, thinning hair and coarse hair, especially the facial hair. Select the correct type of hair colour to disguise your grey hair, but don’t go more than two shades darker or lighter than your natural hair colour. If you use a dark colour it can emphasize a dull complexion.

If you want to keep your grey, endeavour to use a hair shampoo and conditioner that is targeted especially for grey hair. Grey hair can look yellow or greenish on some people. To neutralize the yellow colour and leave your hair shiny and beautiful, try using a greying shampoo that contains a violet based colour, instead of your usual shampoo. Highlights or lowlights can disguise any grey you want to disguise by blending them into the rest of your hair. The same goes for colouring your hair. Avoid going more than two shades lighter than your natural hair colour to avoid looking older than you really are.

Moisturizing (conditioning) is a requirement for older hair. Use a weekly deep conditioning treatment - suggested for aging hair. This will help to preserve the moisture levels in your hair. As time goes by your hair loses its elasticity and this makes it more difficult to style, so try using a protein treatment at least once a month to assist your hair. For men and women, thinning hair can be given a more voluminous look by using volumizing products such as conditioners and mousses.

Depending on their different needs, some people would prefer a handheld GPS unit over a permanent one. A portable or a handheld unit allows users great freedom to move around even without a car. Sometimes though, the efficiency of units depends on how you pick and use them.

Pick the Right Size

Size always matters. If you want a portable GPS, it should necessarily be handy enough to tote around. You don’t want to have to carry a large screen that looks like a textbook or a laptop. Handheld devices should be small enough to fit your pockets.

Do remember however, that GPS devices are supposed to display maps and instructions. Devices that are too small may have displays that are either too confusing or too small to decipher. Get a device with a size that you are most at ease with.

Always Charge Fully

Battery Packs - The greatest limitation of portable GPS devices are their battery packs. You cannot expect handheld units to last for the entire day. At the most, they can only give you enough power for a few hours covering less than half a day. This may be a problem for you especially if you end up getting lost after a long nature walk.

To maximize the use of your unit, always use it fully charged. If you are traveling in your car or headed for another person’s home, always consider bringing your handheld GPS battery charger.

Keep Unit Updated

Internal Maps - GPS devices have internal maps. These maps however are limited to specific areas and continents. Some units also do not automatically update their maps when new places are added. You therefore have to periodically update your device yourself. Some brands have their own websites where you can download maps or data to update your old GPS maps.

Think of Driving

Do you plan to drive and use your handheld device at the same time? Do remember that these units are small and are not always user friendly. Using one while driving may divert your attention. Make sure you keep yourself safe by making yourself familiar with your unit first before using it in a car. Your GPS device should also have such features as voice capabilities and pre programming of destinations. This will be more convenient and safer for you as you drive.

Nothing is more convenient than a handheld GPS. If you pick and use your unit properly, you can only really gain greater convenience.
