If you consider yourself a real singer, please think about taking care of your voice. There are a multitude of environmental factors that could contribute to ruining or harming your vocal cords, such as first hand or second hand cigarette smoke, dry air and lack of moisture in your surroundings, stressful situations that mean you have to be tense and shout, for example. Your vocal cords are very valuable as they contribute to you as a singer.
Stereotyped voice ailments are hoarseness, sore throats, drainage from allergies—and all of these can be diagnosed and treated by an experienced doctor who has ideally treated singers. Don’t attempt to diagnose yourself from other singers’ ailments or injuries as you might try to treat yourself with something that is dangerous to your voice or may be totally ineffective. You definitely don’t want to harm your voice further, so the best choice for you to make is to see your experienced medical professional.
If your voice has been overused, this might mean that the tissues of your vocal cords have been abraded or that there might be a muscle spasm that is causing your voice to deepen or to sound very hoarse. This is just something you cannot afford to have as a singer. The care of your voice as a precious instrument is so important because if you don’t care for it you are setting yourself up for health problems, if not now then later.
If you smoke realize that as a singer you simply cannot allow yourself to continue, as this will make your voice hoarse and raspy. When you catch a cold, the tissues will be irritated and it will sound like you have the cold or flu. Stay away from food that irritate your stomach so you do not get acid reflux, which can also inflame and hurt your throat.
If your throat is very dry, you might find that you wish to try steaming. All you need to do is to boil a bowl of water and then position your face over it with a towel over your head to keep in the steam. Breath the steam into your mouth for five or ten minutes, letting it moisturize your membranes, letting them warm up, stretch and loosen.
If you are looking for a fast fix for a irritated or sore throat, try gargling lemon juice and honey. Do it once in the morning and then later in the early evening, as this can soothe a raspy throat. Or you can sip a 6 ounce cup of water mixed with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, which can calm an inflamed throat.
When you are looking to make sure that you keep your voice, remember to take good care of it. Don’t stretch or strain your voice if you have been feeling sore in your throat area or if you find that talking normally takes an effort! Alcohol and cigarettes can have an adverse effect on your voice, so avoid them before performances or before practices.
Always remember to take the time to go to a doctor if a problem persists, because it will lead to more serious problems later. You don’t want to be known as the singer who didn’t care for their voice properly. If you take yourself seriously as a singer then your voice and its health should be one of your top priorities.
